Kevin Behrens’ rise has been magnificent. From playing much of his football in the Regionalliga and 2. Bundesliga, the German forward didn’t make his Bundesliga debut until the age of 30. And now at 32, his performances this season has seen the Union Berlin player called-up to Julian Nagelsmann’s first Germany squad.
On tour in the US with the German national team, Behrens told reporters of his rise. “I’m very proud that I never gave up,” said Behrens, who has scored four goals in seven games this season. A traditional targetman, and strong in the air, the former Sandhausen forward admitted that he was “shocked and very surprised” to hear of his Germany nomination.
Speaking to media, Behrens thanked his wife. “She plays a very important role. She always had my back, even in difficult times. She has been through everything, from Wilhelmshaven to now,” said Behrens. “My wife is the greatest support.”
Germany play USA on October 14 in Connecticut before facing Mexico in Philadelphia the following Wednesday, just two days before the Bundesliga resumes with Borussia Dortmund hosting Werder Bremen on Friday night.
Mats Hummels (34) also returns to the Germany squad under Julian Nagelsmann and alongside Behrens, there’s also first call-ups for Robert Andrich and Chris Führich, while Pascal Groß retains his place.
