Kevin Keegan has revealed his cancer is stage 4, the most advanced form, speaking in Newcastle on Monday.
According to L'Équipe, the 75-year-old disclosed the severity during one of his first public appearances since his illness was made public in January, at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House.
He told the audience the disease was picked up after a car accident led to surgery, when a pre-operative scan uncovered the cancer. He said a specialist described a new treatment with an exceptional success rate, but when Keegan asked about his own chances, the figure given was 33%, far lower than the 80 or 90% he had imagined.
Keegan is a former England captain and later managed the national team. As a player, he starred for Liverpool from 1971 to 1977 and Newcastle from 1982 to 1984.
He won the Ballon d'Or twice, in 1978 and 1979, during his time with Hamburg. As a manager, he later came close to the title with Newcastle, finishing second in 1995-1996.
