Huddersfield Town owner Kevin Nagle called a fan “negative” on X after they called for manager Lee Grant to be sacked.

The Terriers fan, who goes by the name Si, tweeted that he is “still firmly Grant out” following his side’s 2-0 win Northampton Town on Monday.

It provoked a sharp response from Nagle, who is an active user on the social media site and often enters into dialogue with fans.

The outburst from the owner appears to reaffirm his faith in Grant in the process, who has the side in fifth place, which would provide Huddersfield with a play-off place if they maintain their current berth.

The fan’s rant took aim at Grant’s style of play, struggles against quality opposition and difficulties in possession.

They were views clearly not shared by Nagle, who replied from his own X account: “The Si way. OMG. Always negative. Help you.”

It is clear that Nagle was hoping for some positivity following the win, which was, in fairness, the Terriers’ fifth consecutive game unbeaten.

It followed a resounding 5-0 win over Port Vale, another victory against Rotherham United, and two draws against Wigan Athletic and Northampton.

In fact, Huddersfield have just two losses in their last 10 games in all competitions, one against league leaders Cardiff City, and the other against Luton Town, who were in the Premier League just two seasons ago.

“Sorry I’m not a happy clapper, Kev,” was Si’s short response.

That interaction was one of a dozen that Nagle had with fans on the social media platform following the win, most in response to criticism.

One fan, Jack, pointed out that Nagle had failed to tweet about the positive result against Northampton, and was instead spending his time arguing with fans online.

“Sorry Jack,” Nagle replied. “There are people that make a point of attacking our Club. Some personal attacks. I am not the same as those other owners–right or wrong.

“I am also not a potted plant and have invested a lot to make HT better across the board.”

While it is understandable that Nagle may want to defend the club against narratives gaining traction, bickering with individual fans on their own singularly held opinions is not the spread of positivity the owner appears to be after.

His open dialogue with fans, particularly with issues to do with fan experience, is admirable and rare, but it doesn’t need to extend to getting into the weeds with supporters as though he’s just another member of a fan forum.

Now would be a bad time to sack Lee Grant

That being said, Nagle’s support for Grant probably comes at a good time.

After a very patchy start, concluding with a run of five consecutive losses in all competitions from the end of September to the start of November, the Terriers appeared to have turned a corner.

Although they were supposed to bounce straight back up to the Championship with Birmingham City, Huddersfield should not let perfection get in the way of progress, and a potential promotion bid.

As things stand, they are only seven points off Lincoln City in the last automatic promotion spot, and in a league where every side looks beatable, they could soon climb if they can continue their current run.

A review may be required at the end of the season, but as things stand, Huddersfield are heading in the right direction.
