Kevin Phillips has branded talk of Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris leaving as “very strange and bizarre”, amid online rumours over his future.

According to Sunderland Echo, while some reports suggest Le Bris could be replaced if Sunderland fail to qualify for Europe in the coming weeks, there has been no indication from within the club that the 50-year-old is under immediate threat and his position is not in jeopardy.

Le Bris led the Black Cats to promotion in his debut campaign in English football, then secured Premier League safety on Wearside this season.

“I keep hearing this... I spend a lot of time in the North East and I find it very strange and bizarre that I'm hearing this conversation, because what he's done at Sunderland since he's been there has been outstanding.”

“And he showed in the Premier League, one of the best leagues in the world, he can compete, he can put a side together that can compete and beat some of the big teams in this league and survive. So I don't understand where these come from, because I think every fan or pretty much most of the fans in the North East are more than happy with Regis.”

European qualification remains to be decided in the coming weeks, and chatter around Le Bris’ position continues online.
