FC Barcelona could face defensive problems ahead of their Champions League round of 16 first leg against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

According to a report from Barca Universal, defender Eric Garcia is dealing with muscle discomfort which may stop him from starting the match.

His possible absence would increase Barcelona’s defensive problems as Jules Kounde & Alejandro Balde are already ruled out with hamstring injuries.

Araujo ready for possible return

If Garcia is not fit to play, Ronald Araujo is expected to return to the starting lineup. The Uruguayan defender has not played regularly in recent matches but this game could offer him important chance to step back into the team.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick is now studying different defensive options to deal with the situation.

Flick weighs two defensive setups

Flick is considering two possible defensive plans for the match in England.

In first option, Araujo could start at right back while Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin would form the central defense, with Joao Cancelo playing on the left side.

The second option would move Cancelo to right back while Araujo partners Cubarsi in central defense. In that case, Gerard Martin would start on the left side of defense.

Youth players could join the bench

Because of the injuries, Barcelona may also turn to young defenders from the academy. Reports suggest Alvaro Cortes and Xavi Espart could be included on the bench as backup options.
