The Owls jetted off for their pre-season tour of Germany and Austria on Friday, and there's a player on board that some fans perhaps did not expect to be on there.

Worries over whether Bernard was going to stay on as a Wednesday player were growing, and that fire was only fueled by a cryptic Instagram post that he put out just days before his new deal was announced, that read: "Ready for the next chapter."

This led some Wednesdayites to believe that the ex-Man United defender, who was then a free agent following the expiration of his previous deal with the Steel City club at the end of June, would be leaving the Owls and heading somewhere else.

There was plenty of reported interest in Bernard's services. The Star said that teams across the Championship and Europe were keen on securing Bernard's signature, but, eventually, he has put pen to paper on a new deal with Wednesday.

The Star's Joe Crann has revealed that the 23-year-old defender's fresh terms schedule him to stay at Hillsborough until the summer of 2027.

When the deal was initially announced, Wednesday gave nothing away about the length of the deal; they only said that he penned a new one and nothing more.

As well as Crann, Bernard's representatives, Omni Sports, also gave away this key detail in their client's contract.

It was reported on Thursday that talks between Wednesday and the Jamaican's camp had advanced, and that he was expected to stay put.

He was initially offered a new agreement in May, but it took a couple of months to get everything agreed.

Manager Danny Rohl had previously stated that Bernard's involvement at the Copa América had played a part in delaying things when it came to a prospective contract, as per The Star.

Given the other clubs who were said to be after the 23-year-old, coupled with where Wednesday ended up finishing in the league last season, barely surviving relegation, it would have been totally understandable if the defender had gone elsewhere.

But, when we look at Bernard's decision, and pretty much everything that has happened at Wednesday over the past half-a-year, it all seems to come back to one man and that's the German that's in charge.

Bernard will know first-hand the brilliance of the 35-year-old. Every day that Rohl was in the building last season he would have felt that magnetism and it factor that's turned the boss into one of the most highly regarded people in management, at this level.

The defender wouldn't have tied himself down for so long if he didn't think that the German could take this club to special places. The fact that he has committed himself to something fairly long-term speaks volumes of what the players, but Bernard in particular, think of him.
