Key Germany players and Manuel Neuer's family are said to have driven talks over a one-last-time World Cup return, with the 40-year-old encouraged to reconsider Germany duty, Sport BILD reports.

National team figures strongly advocated to Julian Nagelsmann for Neuer's call-up. Plans to recall him have reportedly proved contentious.

Performances in the latter stages of the Champions League strengthened their case. Bayern team-mates also urged him to rethink retirement from international football.

His family encouraged him too, approving another season at Bayern and a possible World Cup appearance.

That shift was communicated to the DFB, though there had been little to no contact between Nagelsmann and Neuer until then.

Phone calls then increased, with a comeback discussed between the pair and internally at the DFB.

The coaching staff were said to agree that his willingness to play at the World Cup opened a new option.
