Key reason why Barcelona rejected Marcus Rashford transfer despite 29 goal contributions | OneFootball

Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Barcelona’s decision to pass up the chance to sign Marcus Rashford permanently was not a result of his performances under Hansi Flick.

Rashford spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan from Manchester United and finished with 14 goals and 15 assists, contributing directly to 29 goals across all competitions. 

Although he was not an automatic starter, the England international made a significant impact as Barcelona won both La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup.

Yet when the time came to decide on his long-term future, Barça opted for Anthony Gordon instead and Romano has explained that the choice was primarily driven by what Flick wanted from his attack.

Flick was happy with Rashford

Rather, the Barcelona manager respected the forward and developed a strong relationship with him during the season, so much so that his attitude and performances were viewed positively by the German coach.

That makes the club’s decision particularly interesting because Rashford had delivered productive numbers and helped the club win trophies. However, Flick was looking beyond his output in front of goal.

The manager wanted a forward capable of offering more across the attacking line while contributing significantly when Barcelona did not have possession.

Why Gordon fitted Flick’s plans better

Flick wanted someone who could cover multiple positions in attack while also providing the work rate required to support the team’s defensive structure. 

On that note, Barcelona’s coaching staff believed Gordon was better suited to those demands.

The English winger’s ability to operate on either flank, coupled with the defensive work expected of him, ultimately made him the preferred option.

In other words, Barcelona’s choice was less about replacing Rashford’s production and more about finding a profile that matched Flick’s tactical requirements.
