Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has pinpointed a persistent issue plaguing the club for the past six years, following a frustrating goalless draw against Chippa United on Wednesday. The result saw Amakhosi drop to fifth place in the standings after failing to break down a resilient opponent.

The Soweto giants generated several promising chances, the clearest falling to Mfundo Vilakazi, who was denied from close range by Chippa goalkeeper Dumisani Msibi.

Ben Youssef began by crediting the opposition before addressing his team's recurring shortcoming."I’ve to say congratulations to Chippa for the game they played. They played with a good structure, and there was fight in every challenge," he said on SuperSport TV. "When you get a six-metre opportunity one-v-one you don’t score, that’s football."

The problem is starkly reflected in the club's scoring records. The last time Chiefs netted more than 34 goals in a 30-game season was in 2019/20, when they scored 48 and finished second. Since then, their goal tallies have consistently dwindled: 34 in both 2020/21 and 2021/22, 32 in 2022/23, and a mere 25 in each of the last two seasons under Cavin Johnson and Nasreddine Nabi.

With a final match against TS Galaxy before the AFCON break this Sunday, Ben Youssef acknowledged the deep-rooted nature of the issue and vowed to address it."Now we are every time in the final third, and we don’t score. That’s the big problem that we have, and we have to continue to work," he stated, committing to "correct the same problem."
