Kieran Tierney quipped that he will “probably” steer clear of Kasper Schmeichel when they reunite at Celtic after the international break…

The 28-year-old netted what proved to be the decisive goal in Scotland’s 4–2 victory over Denmark at Hampden on Tuesday evening, the first of two stoppage-time strikes. After a defensive miscue fell his way, Tierney bent the ball beyond his Celtic teammate, who was unable to keep it out.

Post-match, Tierney expressed respect for the experienced Danish goalkeeper while joking that he might have to give the 38-year-old some space. “Probably,” he said with a grin, when asked whether he would have to avoid Kasper when the duo return to Hoops training ahead of Saturday night’s encounter against St Mirren.

It was Tierney’s second competitive goal of the season, his first coming against Kilmarnock at Celtic Park prior to the international break.

Given Marcelo Saracchi’s injury, KT will have to be relied upon at club level over the coming weeks and it’s pleasing to see his confidence levels will surely now be sky-high.

Speaking via Sky Sports after his Hampden heroics for his country, Tierney said: “That’s the sad thing in football – somebody has to lose. If it were the other way about, it would be heartbreaking for us, but we’ve been through it as a nation plenty of times. We deserve the chance of getting there.”

“It was mental. I ran to the dugout and everybody was up – the staff, subs and coaches. I think that shows one of our biggest strengths is the togetherness, through good and bad times. We’re there and want the best for each other.”

“The manager said before the game today that everyone is important, and the people who come on and don’t come on, we still need to give our all. This team do that.”

Scott McTominay, Lawrence Shankland, and Kenny McLean were also on the scoresheet for Steve Clarke’s side who secured Scotland’s first World Cup berth in 28 years.
