Kieran Trippier praised Newcastle’s “game management” as they reached the Carabao Cup final with a 4-0 aggregate win over Arsenal.
The Magpies won the second leg at St James Park 2-0 thanks to goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon, following their 2-0 first-leg win at the Emirates.
Newcastle took the lead when Alexander Isak’s strike cannoned off the post and fell to Jacob Murphy, who finished into an empty net.
Anthony Gordon then added a second for Newcastle shortly after half-time to put the game, and the final, out of sight for Arsenal, seizing on a poor pass from David Raya to steal the ball off Declan Rice before picking out the bottom corner.
And Trippier says Newcastle took lessons from the way their opponents approach the game.
“Arsenal do game management a lot and we did the same,” Trippier explained to Sky Sports (via BBC Sport live blog).
It is the second Carabao Cup final Tripper has reached with Newcastle, having lost the final at Wembley two years ago to Manchester United.
But the veteran full-back has full confidence that his side can go one better this time.
“We’ve had the taste of it,” he said.
“Unfortunately we got beat last time but we’ve got that experience. We’ve been in these moments before.
“I think the first time there was a lot of emotion from the lads that have never been in a final and now we know how to handle that.
“Little things like tickets and all those nightmares, it’s carnage.
“It does take a lot out of you. There’s a lot of things that come into it and it takes a lot of energy out of you.
“Now we can get everything boxed off and just focus on the game.”
Newcastle will face either Liverpool or Tottenham in the final of the competition, who are set to face off on Thursday night.
Spurs take a one-goal advantage into the second leg at Anfield.
