He was seen in close conversation with David Beckham, a principal owner, and with the rest of the squad.

His debut is on Wednesday at 20:00 local time, 21:00 in Argentina, in the Campeones Cup against Cruz Azul at the Nu Stadium.

The single-match contest pits the MLS champions against Liga MX’s Campeón de Campeones. The former player seeks a first trophy in his first coaching job abroad, after Rosario Central, Unión de Santa Fe and Platense.

González becomes the third coach of “Las Garzas” this season, after Javier Mascherano and Guillermo Hoyos. Injuries have bitten, with only four wins in the last 13, exits in the Concachampions round of 16 and the Leagues Cup’s opening phase, and a gap of nine points to the Eastern Conference leaders. He will try to avoid a first trophyless year since 2022.
