Kleber Gladiador has looked back on Marcos’ final months in 2011, from a refused June penalty to a last Dérbi win in August.

On 19 June at Canindé, with Palmeiras’ ground under renovation, they led Avaí 4-0 when a penalty was given. Captain Kleber beckoned the number one, but Marcos refused and Felipão blocked it. “Incredibly, I was waiting for him to take it,” he told Nosso Palestra, before scoring.

“Marcão is a massive figure. Even with his limitations and pain, having him on the pitch with us was hugely important.”

His final Palmeiras v Corinthians was on 28 August 2011, a 2-1 win in Presidente Prudente in the first half of the Brasileirão. Few realised it was farewell, not even team-mates. Kleber said, “We knew his physical issues made it hard, but I did not imagine it would be his last.”

Famed as the Santo in shirt 12 in 1999, and having denied Marcelinho Carioca from the spot wearing number one, he bade farewell to the Dérbi in 97. The game was two days after the club’s anniversary, his personal tribute to Palmeiras, the only team of his career.

Marcos’ late career followed a 2008 title and a near-miss in 2009. Felipão returned in 2010, and from then the goalkeeper increasingly managed pain and fitness issues.
