Klopp appointed Germany head coach on four-year deal | OneFootball

Klopp returns to the dugout two years after leaving Liverpool, taking over as Germany head coach on a four-year deal through to the 2030 World Cup. The DFB confirmed the appointment in Frankfurt on Friday, with the project geared towards being competitive in 2030.

The 59-year-old embarks on a long-term plan that stretches beyond Euro 2028. Klopp has said there is plenty of work to do with the Mannschaft.

He succeeds Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany were knocked out by Paraguay on penalties in the 2026 World Cup last 16. That result extended a downturn that has lingered since their 2014 world title.

Until now global director of football at Red Bull, Klopp is mindful that German football needs renewal, including youth development. His intensity, rapport with players and experience under heavy scrutiny make him a compelling choice for the rebuild.

Per Mertesacker will also join the DFB structure, not as Klopp’s assistant, but as sporting chief executive from 1 January 2027, replacing Andreas Rettig, with a deal to 2030. The 2014 World Cup winner, formerly head of Arsenal’s academy and a veteran of more than 100 caps for Germany, will oversee the pathway.

The federation has entrusted its sporting project to one of the most influential German coaches of recent decades, giving him time and backing to build again. Will it go as well as it did at Anfield?
