Julian Nagelsmann is no longer the German national team coach following the team’s early exit from the 2026 World Cup. The former Bayern Munich coach could be replaced by Jürgen Klopp. The current Bayern executives also have an opinion on the matter.
It’s not uncommon for the selection of the German national team coach to become a political issue. Everyone with influence in German soccer wants a say. And everyone has an opinion.
That will also be the case once negotiations between the DFB and Jürgen Klopp are concluded. Talks are currently underway, but no agreement has been reached yet.
Klopp himself is open to the job as national team coach; in fact, he finds it appealing. But he is currently still under contract with the Red Bull Group.
So it will still be a while before a deal can be announced. Some details need to be worked out, especially since Klopp himself is naturally trying to get the best deal for himself. After the third disappointing World Cup in a row, he naturally has the upper hand when it comes to demands for change.
According to information from BILD, Klopp would have the full support of his former archrival, Bayern Munich, as national team coach. It’s also clear to the Bayern bosses that German soccer could really use Klopp right now.

Although there were the occasional jibes during his time as BVB coach, there’s certainly no sign of a bad relationship here. Support for Klopp—who currently serves as a World Cup analyst for Magenta TV —is therefore strong, and the more influential figures who welcome the idea, the more likely it is that there will be positive news at the end of the negotiations.
The next goals would certainly be clear. The DFB squad is set to make a good impression in the Nations League, after which preparations for the 2028 European Championship will begin.
