City’s German duo Rebecca Knaak and Sydney Lohmann qualified as runners-up in Euro 2025 Group C after a 4-1 defeat to Sweden.
In a straight shootout for top spot, Germany took an early lead when Jule Brand finished off a swift counter attack, with Knaak involved in the build-up.
But Sweden took control of the tie soon after with Stina Blackstenius’ smart finish drawing them level despite a Knaak’s best efforts to stop the forward in her tracks.
It was two soon after when a sliding challenge from Sarai Linder saw the ball ricochet off Smilla Holmberg and into the net after a buccaneering run from the Sweden full-back.
And it got worse for the Germans before the break, as Carlotta Wamser received her marching orders for handling the ball on the line, meaning they’d have to play over an hour with 10.
Fridolina Rolfo fired home the resultant spot kick to hand the Swedes a two-goal cushion, and they never looked back.
In need of inspiration, Germany manager Christian Wuck introduced Lohmann at half-time, but the fifth and final goal of an entertaining evening would fall Sweden’s way with 10 to play.
With the Germans stretched, substitute Madelen Janogy clipped an inviting ball over to the back post which was tapped across the face of goal by Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.
Lina Hurtig was there to meet it, tapping home Sweden’s fourth and laying down a marker heading into the knockout stages.
Knaak, Lohmann and co. will face the winners of Group D, with France, England and the Netherlands all battling for qualification on Sunday evening.
