Barcelona secured the services of Marcus Rashford from Manchester United this summer on a season-long loan. The Catalans also have the option to sign the Englishman permanently for around €30m in 2026.

Recent reports, though, have suggested that the Spanish champions have set their sights on Kobbie Mainoo as well.

The English midfielder has struggled for game time at the Theatre of Dreams this season and is yet to start a game so far in the Premier League. Mainoo apparently wanted to leave on loan this summer in search of regular football, in a bid to better his chances of featuring at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, the Red Devils refused to let him go. Consequently, Mainoo has registered just 76 minutes of Premier League football this season.

United’s quest for a new midfielder in 2026

United were keen to sign a new midfielder this summer, but failed in their endeavour to strengthen the position. However, a new face for the pivot role remains on Ruben Amorim’s agenda, and the Premier League giants are likely to prioritise the position in 2026.

The situation has further added to speculation regarding Mainoo’s future, with multiple suitors apparently eyeing the youngster with interest.

The Englishman was a big hit under former manager Erik ten Hag and even started the Euro 2024 Final for his national team, which they lost to Spain.

Recent reports have suggested that Barcelona have identified the 20 year old as a possible replacement for Gavi, who is expected to be side lined for a while due to a meniscus injury.

The Spaniard has previously missed more than a year due to an ACL injury, and it was suggested that the Catalans want to sign Mainoo to fill his shoes. However, another report has now refuted those claims.

Mainoo working to convince Amorim

According to Fichajes, Barcelona have decided not to sign a new midfielder to take Gavi’s place in the squad.

The youngster is expected to be sidelined for four to five months after undergoing surgery, and his absence is a big blow to Hansi Flick’s plans.

However, the Catalans believe that there are no replacements in sight who match Gavi’s profile. As such, they don’t want to make any signings just to make up the numbers.

The news will please United fans, who will be eager to see Mainoo succeed in the club’s colours. Interestingly, recent reports have stated that the Englishman has stepped up his efforts to convince Amorim and secure his place in the starting XI.

All eyes will now be on Saturday’s Premier League game against Brentford. Interestingly, Casemiro is suspended for the game, so Mainoo could be an option for Amorim in midfield – but if he isn’t, the noise surrounding his future will continue to grow.
