Under Michael Carrick, Manchester United have climbed up to third in the Premier League table, while several key stars are enjoying a new lease of life.

This is especially true for Kobbie Mainoo. The Englishman was often overlooked by former head coach Ruben Amorim, with the Carrington graduate not starting a single league game all season under him.

He was made to compete with Bruno Fernandes for a spot in the starting line-up, an almost impossible task.

That made the England international consider his options, with the 20-year-old asking to leave on loan in the summer. He was even ready to quit in January before Carrick’s timely arrival.

Kobbie Mainoo is now an integral part of the team

Since the legendary midfielder stepped through the doors, Kobbie Mainoo has been an ever-present fixture in the starting XI.

Naturally, given his importance to the team, INEOS are keen to agree a new deal with the midfield wonderkid, with his current deal valid until 2027 with the club having the option to extend it by a year.

The problem, as per The Daily Mail, is the player’s wage demands. Initially, he was asking for much more than INEOS were ready to offer, but had reduced his terms following Amorim’s repeated rejections.

But now that he is a key part of Carrick‘s plans, there are doubts as to whether he will agree to those same demands.

Contract standoff details

The Stockport-born ace is among the club’s lowest earners, earning £25,000 gross per week, excluding bonuses (via capology), and he is keen to bring his wages in line with the club’s other high earners.

“Kobbie Mainoo’s long-term future at Manchester United is still up in the air as talks over a new contract for the England midfielder drag on.

“It was hoped that Ruben Amorim’s sacking would see a breakthrough in negotiations after Mainoo was frozen out under the former United boss, and the situation is certainly more positive now he has been restored to the starting line-up by new head coach Michael Carrick.

“However, Confidential understands there are still lingering issues between the 20-year-old’s camp and the Old Trafford hierarchy after he agreed to a compromise on his new salary and then didn’t hear back from United until Amorim was fired in January.

United cannot afford to get this decision wrong

“Mainoo earns significantly less than his team-mates, and it’s unclear if his representatives would be willing to accept the same terms now he has underlined his importance to the team since Carrick replaced Amorim.”

Interestingly, plenty of United’s Premier League rivals, as well as other European giants, are keeping tabs on the situation, so INEOS cannot afford to get this decision wrong.
