A potential January loan move to Napoli for Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo is at serious risk of collapsing after the latest decision by Ruben Amorim.

Mainoo open to United exit

Since Amorim’s arrival as Erik ten Hag’s replacement in November last year, Mainoo’s role in the team has dwindled. This season however, his playing time has been reduced even further, with the Portuguese coach seemingly unable to find a place in his plans for the midfielder.

Mainoo has yet to start a Premier League game this term, only managing 183 minutes of action. His only start of the campaign came in the embarrassing EFL Cup loss to Grimsby Town in August.

He asked to leave United during the final stretch of the summer transfer window but the club turned down his request, insisting there was not enough time to secure a replacement.

Determined to secure his place in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup, Mainoo knows that regular playing time is essential – a key reason behind his desire for a January move.

There has been no shortage of interest in the 20-year-old, who continues to be linked to the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Chelsea. A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that there are up to 12 suitors for Mainoo.

Napoli are believed to be his preferred transfer destination. The recent revivals of Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund at Napoli serve as a compelling blueprint for what Mainoo could achieve with a switch to Naples.

Antonio Conte’s side are actively seeking to bolster their midfield and view Mainoo as an ideal candidate to fulfil their requirements.

However, according to Il Mattino, Amorim has vetoed Mainoo’s move to Napoli during the winter window.

Mainoo’s Napoli blow

The report [as highlighted by Get Football News Italy] confirms that Mainoo is a top priority for the reigning Serie A champions.

Napoli’s Sporting Director, Giovanni Manna, has been in regular contact with Mainoo’s representatives and there is a clear desire from the player to join Gli Azzurri.

McTominay has apparently been leveraging his personal connection with Mainoo, advocating for Napoli as the ideal environment for the young midfielder’s development.

However, Amorim has vetoed any deal, significantly damaging Mainoo’s hopes of moving to the Partenopei.
