Ronald Koeman will not renew his contract as Netherlands head coach, informing the Dutch federation on Tuesday, a day after their 2026 World Cup last-32 defeat to Morocco on penalties following a 1-1 draw. According to Superdeporte, his message confirmed he would not extend his deal.

The decision ends his second spell, begun after the Qatar World Cup. It featured competitive signs, with a European Championship semi-final and a Nations League quarter-final, but broke on the biggest stage, the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Netherlands topped Group F in the group phase, then went out earlier than hoped in a high-pressure knockout. The shootout loss accelerated everything.

Koeman, formerly of Valencia and Barcelona, called the campaign disappointing and said the choice was not easy. He thanked players, staff and the federation across both spells. His contract, signed in 2022, had been due to run through 2026.

He added that now felt the right time to devote more time to his wife, children and grandchildren, framing the departure as a natural step after absorbing the setback. The KNVB farewelled a coach who returned to try to carry the Oranje to the summit and departs with a sense of unfinished business.

The exit also carried a Valencia subplot. Santiago Cañizares had pledged to tattoo Koeman’s face if the Netherlands won the World Cup, a wager voiced during the tournament. With Morocco ending their run, the former goalkeeper is set to stay tattoo free.
