Manchester City assistant coach Kolo Toure has offered an update on those of the club’s most notable injury absentees from recent matches.

City head into the weekend looking to continue strong momentum, having followed up a 3–0 win over Sunderland with a statement Champions League victory at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid.

With fixtures coming thick and fast, fitness management has become a crucial part of the coaching staff’s responsibilities, especially as Pep Guardiola’s squad continues to deal with a cluster of short-term and long-term absences.

The trip to Selhurst Park arrives at an important moment in the season, with Manchester City eager to maintain pressure on leaders Arsenal in the Premier League title race. Crystal Palace’s threat have caused problems for elite sides already this season, and as such City’s latest injury update was a closely watched point of interest during Friday’s media duties.

Speaking to the media in City’s pre-match press conference ahead of the weekend’s trip to Crystal Palace, assistant coach Kolo Toure said of the team, “Today, the players are off. Tomorrow, when everybody comes back, we’ll know more about the players.”

One name ruled out of recent matches is John Stones, on whom Toure explained, “If I’m sure, it was his thigh I think. That was the problem. But I’m sure it wasn’t something too big, I think he’ll be back soon.”

As for longer-term absentee Rodri, sidelined since October through a hamstring problem sustained at Brentford, the Manchester City coach said, “Rodri is training really well, doing his rehab really, really well.

“He looks sharper and sharper every day we see him, but for sure I don’t think we’re going to see him for the weekend. But he’s on the process.”

John Stones’ potential return in the coming matches would provide a major boost to Pep Guardiola, particularly given the defender’s tactical value in both centre-back and hybrid midfield roles.

Rodri’s situation remains the more delicate one, with Pep Guardiola historically cautious about rushing the midfielder back too soon. His importance to Manchester City’s rhythm and control is undeniable, and the club are likely to prioritise his long-term availability over any short-term risk.

If his recovery continues at its current pace, the Spaniard could realistically target a return in the early stages of the new year, providing much-needed stability in midfield. Until then, City will hope their improving form and tactical cohesion help them navigate the challenges ahead.
