After the bitter semi-final exit against Paris Saint-Germain, Vincent Kompany was disappointed but also combative. In an interview with DAZN, the Bayern coach spoke openly about the reasons for the elimination, praised his team’s performance and also clearly criticized the current handball rule
FC Bayern’s dream of reaching the Champions League final in Budapest has been shattered. After a 4-5 defeat in the first leg , a 1-1 draw in the second leg against Paris Saint-Germain was not enough for the Munich side to progress
Vincent Kompany found the elimination visibly difficult, but the Belgian was remarkably composed immediately after the game. „I don’t have the ability to be disappointed for long,“ the Bayern coach told DAZN
„It’s bitter, we lost narrowly in both games. We have to accept that we played against a great opponent,“ said Kompany
Particularly important to the 40-year-old was the assessment that FC Bayern were absolutely on a par with the reigning Champions League winners. „We played at eye level with PSG,“ emphasized the Belgian
Kompany was generally satisfied with his team’s first half in particular: „I thought our first half was actually good. We were often in the areas where we could be dangerous,“ the Bayern coach analyzed
However, he also acknowledged the French side’s strong defensive performance: „PSG defended very well, though. They defended the flanks very well and were always very active. They managed to prevent us from getting any really good finishes in the spaces,“ explained Kompany

The Bayern coach became particularly emotional when discussing refereeing decisions and the controversial handball scene involving PSG professional João Neves
Munich had vehemently demanded a penalty in the first half after Neves touched the ball with his arm outstretched, but the VAR did not intervene due to the current interpretation of the rules
Kompany showed understanding for the rule itself, but at the same time made it clear how little he personally thought of it. „I understand the rule, but it’s nonsense,“ the Belgian said clearly
Nevertheless, the Bayern coach did not want to blame the defeat solely on the refereeing team’s decisions. „But the rules are what the rules are. In the end, it was tiny details,“ he explained
Nevertheless, there was frustration about several situations in both semi-finals. „Of course the refereeing decisions hurt us too, especially the one in Paris,“ said Kompany
In the end, however, the Belgian’s pride in his own team prevailed. „In the end, we only lost to Paris by one goal. We tried everything,“ emphasized the Bayern coach
In conclusion, Kompany had fair words for the French finalists: „Congratulations to PSG. We’ll try again.“
