Ezri Konsa says the “brotherhood” in the squad is what helped England to victory over Mexico in the World Cup.

England overcame the odds, battling altitude and a hostile atmosphere at the Azteca Stadium, to defeat co-hosts Mexico 3-2 on their home turf after goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane. Victory sets up a quarter-final clash against Erling Haaland’s Norway after they defeated Brazil 2-1.

The Three Lions’ trying night was tested even further by the sending off of Jarell Quansah early in the second half, after a studs-up challenge on Jesus Gallardo saw the Bayer Leverkusen defender ejected from the match after a VAR review.

Konsa, who started in central defence before moving to right back in the latter stages of proceedings, praised his team-mates for the resilience and determination showed in order to get the win.

“100 per cent, it was a brotherhood,” Konsa said. “I think you saw that today, the effort that we all had to put in, certain players changing positions like myself and putting in a shift, it’s what you want to do if you want to go far in this tournament, and the boss had to make some changes.

“I thought Dan Burn was excellent when he came in as well, and John Stones, so having those kind of players to come on and help us was a great feeling, and yeah, with Erling Haaland we’ll have to focus on that next week and when it comes.”

The 28-year-old also says he would be happy to fill at right back if required, after Quansah’s sending off and Reece James’ injury which forced the Chelsea man to miss out again against Mexico.

“If I’ve got to do it, then yeah, 100 per cent,” he said. “I’ve played there before, and if the manager wants to play me, I’ll do my best.”
