Kris Wigfield has issued a public response to the drama involving Ike Ugbo after his Sheffield Wednesday exit

Sheffield Wednesday have been through a busy summer transfer window so far following the completion of Arise Capital’s takeover of the club.

The group led by David Storch took the Owls out of administration when they purchased the Yorkshire outfit at the beginning of May, sparking a significant rebuild this summer.

The League One side went into administration last October following significant financial mismanagement under the previous owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Kris Wigfield oversaw the day-to-day operations during his time working for Begbies Traynor as Sheffield Wednesday’s administrator.

But the arrival of Arise Capital has allowed for the beginning of a rebuild of the first team squad, with several players moving to Hillsborough, or returning in the case of Barry Bannan.

However, it hasn’t stopped the club from offloading players, with Ike Ugbo becoming the latest to depart the club following an agreement with Apol Limassol in Cyprus.

Wigfield has remained a prominent voice online regarding Sheffield Wednesday even after Arise Capital completed their takeover due to him being a fan of the club.

The Owls’ former administrator reacted to Ugbo’s exit over the weekend, explaining why he felt it was a great move to get rid of him from the first team squad. This came after the Canadian international posted a rather divisive video which suggested his relief at leaving the League One side.

“Getting rid of characters like this from the Club is just as important as any signing,” wrote Wigfield, via his X account.

“When even in the bleakest of financial circumstances, a high wage earner shows such entitlement for the money they receive and such contempt for the supporters that were literally paying his wages- you have no chance.

“Good riddance.”

However, Ugbo took issue with Wigfield’s comments, which led to him posting a story on his Instagram account defending himself.

“I hate having to give this man any attention, but when people choose to speak publicly, I’ll correct the record once,” he wrote.

“I won’t explain private matters for entertainment.

“Those who know the truth know my character: Some people mistake a position for fact.

“One of the first things this man did as admin was try to fine me over rulings which made no sense to me.

“The way I was questioned about my prescribed medication showed me everything I needed to know.

“I’m sure there’s plenty of time now to focus on being proud of the boys week in and week out.

“That’s the last I’ll speak on the past.”

Wigfield has issued a response to Ugbo’s post, claiming that he is no longer going to speak his mind publicly about Sheffield Wednesday.

The former administrator wants to go back to his previous position of being a fan, so will no longer be using his social media to discuss the Owls.

“I’ve got 4.5k followers, nearly all of them fellow Wednesdayites,” wrote Wigfield, via X.

“I’ll always give an honest and forthright view, even when it’s controversial (which it often is).

“But I also prefer a quiet life away from work, and I firmly believe my opinions should never have any chance of influencing the future of SWFC.

“With that in mind, I think this account has served its useful purpose and reached a natural end.

“It’s time for me to do what I enjoy most, quietly supporting Wednesday alongside my friends and family, firmly in the background.

“Thank you to everyone who has followed me and taken the time to read my posts.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s summer business

Sheffield Wednesday have completed 12 signings so far this summer as they prepare for life in League One.

Harry Gray and Mason Burstow have both joined on loan from Leeds United and Hull City, respectively, while the other 10 additions have joined on a permanent basis.

The most notable is the return of Bannan, who has come back to Hillsborough after joining Millwall last January.

The Owls have also signed Billy Mitchell from the Lions, with Callum Slattery, Joe Lumley, Ashley Maynard-Brewer, Connal Trueman and Louie Barry among the other arrivals.

Jordi Liongola, Ricardo Santos and Sil Swinkels have also signed for Sheffield Wednesday.

It’s best for all parties for Ike Ugbo to be moved on

As outsiders, we don’t have all the facts regarding Ugbo and Wigfield’s relationship, and it’s clear that the two didn’t see eye-to-eye when the club was under administration.

However, what is clear is that this is the right time for the forward to move on from Hillsborough.

He struggled for any kind form over the last two seasons after sealing a permanent move to the Owls in 2024 after a promising loan spell.

He failed to score in each of the last two campaigns from a total of 55 league appearances, and it is now best for all parties that he is no longer with the club.
