Kristjaan Speakman has been confirmed as FC Copenhagen’s new sporting director, his first post since leaving Sunderland earlier this year. He will begin work on 1 July.
Taking charge of one of Denmark’s most historic clubs, he is tasked with reviving fortunes after a poor campaign in which they featured in the relegation division for the first time. The club said in a statement that he was the preferred candidate after an extensive recruitment process. A European play-off win means they will enter the Conference League at the qualification stage in 2026/27.
Speakman expressed pride at joining a club with a special history and a demanding fanbase. He outlined a focus on developing and improving sporting functions to bring trophies back to Copenhagen. He maintained ambitions are unchanged, but the approach must evolve to secure lasting success.
He set an immediate priority of supporting head coach Bo Svensson and the sporting staff. He intends to assemble a first-team squad capable of qualifying for the UEFA Conference League and winning the championship, with that work already under way.
Looking further ahead, he will lead the creation of a strategic roadmap to strengthen the club’s sporting position across all teams and functions. CEO Jacob Lauesen praised his vision, noting Speakman’s strategic insight and experience have already shaped the transformation plan and calling him the right person to lead development.
