Kubo suffered a heavy knock and went off as Japan drew 2-2 with the Netherlands at the World Cup. He later suggested he might be fine, while stressing they would have to wait and see.
The forward clashed with Denzel Dumfries and was substituted in the 70th minute after trying, unsuccessfully, to continue. According to Diario Vasco, he attempted to test himself on the touchline but pain prevented a return.
Speaking pitchside after full time, he said he did not know exactly what had happened and felt he had been caught from all sides. He repeated that he thought he was OK, adding they would see how he was.
Images later showed the Real Sociedad winger with ice on the affected area and struggling to put weight on his left leg during the celebrations. A separate photo of him leaving the stadium in a wheelchair circulated widely.
Medical tests will determine the extent of the injury and whether he can face Tunisia on Sunday. It is another setback in a difficult season in which he missed several months for Real Sociedad.
