Kuhn frozen out at Como, one year after £17.5 million move from Celtic

Nicolas Kuhn has been frozen out at Como, one year after securing his £17.5 million move from Celtic…

Former Celtic star Nicolas Kuhn has suffered a huge blow as he was left out of the Como squad for their Serie A opener in Udinese.

Cesc Fabregas left the 26 year old winger out of his squad, with major doubts now hanging over the German’s future, just one year after he signed for the ambitious Serie A side in a deal believed to be worth £17.5 million.

Fabregas, who led Como to fourth place in Serie A last season, thus clinching a Champions League spot, has also left out the likes of Gabrielloni, Van der Brempt, Mazzitelli, Braunoder, Azon, and Fumagalli.

However, the decision to omit the former Celtic star has caused the biggest stir, and as for his fellow shunned teammates, the German is now effectively deemed surplus requirements, meaning the transfer list beckons.

Nicolas Kuhn didn’t have the best of debut seasons on the shores of Lake Como, registering just one goal and assist in 23 appearances for the Italian side, but it has to be remembered that he only started in six of those matches.

Italian insiders believe that the former Rapid Wien man can consider himself unlucky to be shunned due to a minor muscle problem that was the route of his limited game time.

Despite a slow start to his Celtic career, former German youth international Kuhn was a revelation, scoring 24 goals and registering 18 assists in 69 games for the Hoops that included impressive performances in the Champions League against the likes of RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich.

That kind of form, and not just domestically, as he also proved himself in the Champions League, made him a favourite in the eyes of the Celtic supporters, and he was on of the main factors in the successful 2024/25 campaign which saw Brendan Rodgers side win the League Cup, and the league title as indeed is usually the case over the past decade and a half.

That splendid form attracted interest from numerous clubs including Como, so the 26 year old should have no problem finding another club in the remaining weeks of the transfer window. Or if he is available for a loan deal, it might be something that tempts Martin O’Neill as he looks to strengthen his side ahead of the anticipated Champions League campaign.

If we can get the job done in Linz on Tuesday evening – and it’s clearly not over yet – the Kuhn could be another Champions League proven addition that could be secured. I’ve certainly heard worse suggestions than this one!
