Leeds United made history for the second successive match, winning 2-1 at Manchester United for a first league triumph at Old Trafford in 45 years. It followed a first FA Cup quarter-final win since 1987, with Noah Okafor’s first-half double decisive.

As reported by yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Lisandro Martinez saw red for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair. Casemiro headed in at the back post from a Bruno Fernandes cross, but Leeds held on for a vital three points across the Pennines.

With Anton Stach out, Daniel Farke picked Ao Tanaka alongside Ethan Ampadu rather than Ilia Gruev to keep the ball. Tanaka excelled in build-up, posting 69 touches, second among those in white to Gabriel Gudmundsson, and 42 accurate passes, bettered only by Pascal Struijk and Ampadu, all in 74 minutes. He also won the ball high and skipped past Senne Lammens before being denied, arguably his best display this season.

At half-time the gripe was a lead of only two when it could have been four or five, and after Calvert-Lewin missed a free header, Casemiro’s goal tightened things. Tanaka’s cramp and the arrivals of Gruev and Willy Gnonto disrupted the hosts’ momentum.

Despite leading the division for added-time goals conceded, Leeds recycled possession and saw out seven minutes. It was their first league win since early February and first away since September. They are six points clear with six left, Brighton the only top-half opponent remaining, with virtually-relegated Wolves and Burnley still to visit, so safety feels within reach.
