Leeds United moved closer to Premier League safety with a 3-1 victory over Burnley at Elland Road, sealed by goals from Anton Stach, Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Stach thumped in from 25 yards inside eight minutes, Okafor volleyed home on 52, and Calvert-Lewin quickly added a third from close range. Loum Tchaouna replied, and, according to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Leeds saw out the contest with control.

Pre-match worries about unlocking Burnley’s low block were answered by Stach, who cushioned a Jaka Bijol pass before drilling in. It was his fourth Premier League goal from outside the box this season, a tally no player has bettered, with Liverpool’s Dominic Szoboszlai and Antoine Semenyo of Manchester City level.

Daniel Farke’s side also corrected last week’s slow Wembley start by pressing on the front foot from kick-off. That opener made it 24 first-half efforts in the league, a mark bettered only by Arsenal and Manchester City, and on interval scores alone they would sit sixth.

The win lifted Leeds above Newcastle United into 14th, level with Crystal Palace and three behind Sunderland in 12th, while opening a nine-point cushion to 18th-placed Tottenham Hotspur. With each place worth extra competition revenue, there is incentive to keep climbing.

Chairman Paraag Marathe said in the summer that anything above 18th would be ‘gravy’, and the mood remains upbeat. Stach said the last three games are important, that the team are in a good mood with the fans, and that he hopes they get the wins as well.
