Leeds United reached the FA Cup fifth round draw by beating Birmingham City 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. The hosts missed twice.

A much-changed Leeds side toiled before the break, then struck first after it, Lukas Nmecha squeezing in at Ryan Allsop’s near post.

Birmingham pressed and levelled on 89 minutes when Patrick Roberts’ effort deflected in off James Justin. Extra time brought chances at both ends before Leeds held their nerve from 12 yards.

Facundo Buonanotte endured a debut to forget, withdrawn at half-time for Ethan Ampadu after an off-colour 45 minutes. He attempted 19 passes, misplaced four, lost all three dribble attempts, misplaced both long balls and won one of eight ground duels.

Leeds’ regulars made the difference. Ampadu steadied midfield, Dominic Calvert-Lewin linked play better than Nmecha and Brenden Aaronson outshone Buonanotte. Jayden Bogle and Joe Rodon were solid, with Jaka Bijol the pick of the starters.

Goalkeeper remains the one unresolved position. Lucas Perri, first choice until he was not, made his first start for over a month and excelled, tipping Jay Stansfield’s strike wide and saving Tommy Doyle’s penalty.

"It's always good to have a good game like this. The most important thing is to have confidence in myself. It doesn't depend on the result but obviously it's nice to have a game like this. I hope to keep going and helping the club as always." He was speaking to TNT Sports.

Team-mates sprinted to Perri after Sean Longstaff converted his kick, the goalkeeper beaming in front of the away end. He was then nudged forward to lead the now familiar three chants.
