Kylian Mbappé was met with boos on his injury return as Real Madrid beat Oviedo 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Thursday. According to Le Progres, the France captain was jeered during his comeback.
Out since late April, Mbappé has faced criticism from sections of the Spanish press and Real supporters, including over a trip to Sardinia in early May while his team had a match against Espanyol Barcelona. It was described as his first major backlash since arriving in Madrid in 2024.
He was loudly whistled while warming up early in the second half with Madrid leading 1-0, then again on his introduction in the 68th minute, and at each subsequent touch.
His absence from the Clasico last Sunday, after which Barcelona were officially crowned champions of Spain, leaving Real staring at a trophyless season, has rekindled debate in Spain about a perceived individualistic streak.
Some supporters have called for his departure on social media. Others criticised him for leaving the training centre smiling last Thursday, shortly after a heated altercation between Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde.
Despite the unrest, Mbappé’s individual numbers remain striking, with 41 goals in 42 matches this season, though his second campaign at Real has been a frustrating one without a major trophy.
