After France beat Paraguay in the World Cup last 16 on Saturday, a viral video shows a cloth effigy of Kylian Mbappé being set alight in a public square in Asunción, with a crowd celebrating the act.

The clip appears to have been posted at the weekend and has been widely shared on social platforms and by several media. Ultima Hora reports that it formed part of the San Juan Ara festivities, where people traditionally burn the effigy of the person they most dislike.

Mbappé’s name was written on the doll, casting him as public enemy number one after he converted the winning penalty against the Albirroja on Saturday.

The burning follows racist remarks by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla aimed at the France captain, which were condemned by many public figures and by her own government.

On Thursday she repeated her attack, insulting Mbappé again by calling him a son of a bitch.

The fallout from the tie shows no sign of easing.
