Several FC Barcelona players had a very good year, as they not only won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup with the Blaugrana side, but also won the World Cup with Spain. As a result, up to three players from the Catalan team are competing for this year’s Ballon d’Or, i.e., Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, and Rodri Hernandez.
Among these three players, Yamal seems to be the best-placed to win this award, and several people associated with Barcelona have already asked for the award to be given to him this year. However, he will be facing tough competition from some other players around Europe who also have very strong cases for the biggest individual award in European football.
One such competitor is going to be the Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe, who recently appeared in an interview with L’Equipe. As Mundo Deportivo has reported, while claiming the Ballon d’Or for himself, the French forward also spoke highly of the Barcelona star Lamine Yamal, and named him among one of his favorite young players:
“Among the younger players, I like Lamine Yamal. He has everything. I like Estevão; he has a special creativity. Here, Arda Güler can go very far. Endrick has potential; he is a goalscorer. Warren (Zaïre-Emery) and Désiré (Doué) are going to have great careers, for sure.”
Lamine Yamal, who is still only 19 years of age, and Kylian Mbappe are expected to remain rivals for several years to come, as they will be playing across the El Clasico divide for Barcelona and Real Madrid. Thus, these words from the Frenchman recognizing Yamal as a special talent deserve special recognition and appreciation. However, for now, both of them will continue competing, not only for team titles on the pitch, but also for individual titles like the Ballon d’Or.
