Kylian Mbappe has revealed how far Liverpool went to sign him in 2017. Then a Monaco teenager, he was courted by Europe’s biggest clubs.

His mother even visited the city and Anfield during talks. "She went to the stadium, she met the people," Mbappe recalled. "She was like, 'It's a wonderful club, everybody's so kind, it's a family club, a big club.' She went to Anfield and fell in love with it," he told The Athletic.

Jurgen Klopp set up a secret meeting on a five-room private jet to sell his project.

"I remember we were on the plane and we were turning around and around in the air while he was explaining his project," Mbappe admitted. "I said, 'You don't need to convince me. Despite Liverpool’s push, the move never happened and Mbappe joined PSG, initially on loan before a €180 million permanent deal.

As a teenager he then won the World Cup in 2018. He completed a long-awaited switch to Real Madrid in 2024, and at the 2026 edition he surpassed Miroslav Klose and Lionel Messi as the tournament’s all-time top scorer before France lost to eventual champions Spain in the semi-finals.
