Kylian Mbappé (25) broke his nose in a collision with Austria’s Kevin Danso in France’s Euro 2024 opener. With blood running down his face, the France captain was taken to hospital. Tests confirmed the fracture but also provided an element of reassurance – no immediate operation was needed. However, he would have to wear a mask for the remainder of the tournament and a post-Euro 2024 operation is very much still on the cards.

Following the incident, there was a rush to fabricate a mask for Mbappé, with the match against the Netherlands just four days later. Experts estimated at the time that it would take five days to make the mask that would be tailored to the soon-to-be Real Madrid forward’s face.

However, that process was expedited and he received the mask on Thursday just three days after the incident and one day before the match against the Netherlands. The mask does, however, have its imperfections, as L’Équipe have now revealed.

The mask is 5mm thick, much thicker than the mask worn by Victor Osimhen and crucially thicker than Mbappé himself would have liked, as per L’Équipe. The thickness is a result of the addition of mousse in order to limit impacts. However, an unfortunate byproduct of that is that Mbappé’s peripheral vision has been severely limited.
