Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has given a discreet nod over Lutsharel Geertruida’s future, liking a social media update that said Liverpool’s pursuit was over.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Instagram post by Fabrizio Romano on Monday said Liverpool had failed to strike a deal after talks across 24 hours, and that Sunderland required immediate clarity for any proposal to proceed.
Geertruida is on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, and there is no recall clause in the agreement, so any move would have required the consent of all parties, including head coach Régis Le Bris.
With the window closing on Monday, the Black Cats were reluctant to approve a late exit that would force a rushed replacement.
Geertruida, 25, has been a key figure on Wearside, valued for his ability to play right-back, centre-back or in midfield.
Louis-Dreyfus’s like was low-key, but it chimed with Sunderland’s preference for stability and clarity as the deadline approached.
