According to Superdeporte, La Audiencia Nacional on Tuesday rejected LaLiga’s bid to have players’ kick-off stoppages on the ninth round of LaLiga EA Sports declared illegal, a protest against staging Villarreal-Barcelona in Miami.

Following a hearing on 25 March, the court’s social chamber viewed the gesture as an exercise of freedom of expression linked to freedom of association, as argued by the Asociación de Futbolistas Españoles.

The Prosecutor’s Office requested the lawsuit be dismissed.

LaLiga maintained the action amounted to an unlawful strike and said it caused losses of 8.7 million euros.

The stoppages, each lasting 15 seconds, were called by the players’ union at the start of matches between 17 and 20 October, opposing the proposed Villarreal-Barcelona in Miami, which was later cancelled.
