With Ferland Mendy back fit, Real Madrid have three players who can serve as starting left-back options this season.

Manager Xabi Alonso has his pecking order set clearly, but the fact of the matter remains that the club are overstaffed in the department.

A departure in the position, thus, is seen to be a must either in January or in the summer but it still remains unclear as to which of the players will leave the club.

Given Alvaro Carreras’ clear position as a starter, it will be one of Garcia or Mendy who will be on their way out.

The Garcia situation

As relayed in a recent report by Defensa Central, Sevilla have emerged as a club seriously interested in incorporating Fran Garcia into their dynamics. Their plan, however, is not for next summer but the winter transfer market.

Antonio Cordon, the director of professional football of Sevilla, has opened the shock operation to sign Garcia in January although there is no indication yet that the player is open to such a move.

Sevilla’s idea is to sign Garcia on a loan until the end of the season, and they hope to leverage the fact that Mendy is back to compete at left-back for Xabi Alonso’s side.

The Real Madrid manager, however, highly values Garcia’s profile not only as a substitute for Carreras but also as an option to play alongside the starting left-back in certain formations.

As it stands, the 26-year-old’s contract with Real Madrid runs out in 2027 and the player has a decision to make as to whether he wishes to continue as a substitute at the club or push for a transfer and serve as a starter in a first-division team.

He is currently focused on succeeding at Real Madrid but it remains to be seen if any suitor can get him to change his mind.
