There are only a few days left till the winter transfer window starts. While FC Barcelona have no plans to bring in any new players to their squad in January, this is not the case for other clubs around Europe, who are contemplating their options to strengthen their teams next month.
One such club that is geographically not too far from Barcelona is Girona, who are not having a season as good as the last one, and currently stand 8th in the La Liga rankings.
Although the other Catalan club brought in several players in the last summer transfer window, they are once again looking to reinforce their team in January. For this purpose, Diario AS reports that they have a player whom they know quite well in mind for this purpose, i.e., the Barcelona defender Eric Garcia.
Girona’s interest in the Spaniard is not really a secret, as they wanted to retain him in their squad following the end of his loan stint there last season. However, Barcelona did not allow him to leave because of the injuries suffered by Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen.
Now, with both Araujo and Christensen close to making their returns to the pitch, Garcia is no longer essential for Flick. The former Manchester City defender can actually go down to fifth position in the pecking order, behind the starting duo of Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi and the returning duo of Araujo and Christensen.
Similarly, Barcelona also have to make space in their wage bill, as they are facing problems in getting Dani Olmo and Pau Victor registered with La Liga, and Garcia’s departure can help them in this regard.
While such an operation will not really be easy for Girona, one factor that plays in their favor is that Garcia will leave Barcelona only to join Michel’s side. However, the Blaugranes will also not be giving him away for cheap and Girona will have to make a significant investment to get him.
