Barcelona’s search for defensive reinforcements has sparked fresh speculation in recent days, with Aymeric Laporte emerging as a potential target. 

The experienced Spain international has featured prominently in the Barcelona transfer news, but Athletic Club have now responded, insisting there has been no contact from the Catalan giants.

The Barcelona transfer rumours gathered pace during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Laporte has impressed alongside Pau Cubarsi at the heart of Spain’s defence. 

His performances, combined with his experience and ability to play in a possession-based system, made him a natural fit for Hansi Flick’s style, leading to reports that Barcelona were considering a move.

Athletic Club dismiss Barcelona transfer speculation

Barcelona’s interest in Aymeric Laporte eventually became one of the talking points surrounding the club’s summer recruitment plans. 

In fact, several reports claimed the centre-back had been offered to Barcelona, with the deal viewed as a potential market opportunity.

However, Athletic Club sporting director Mikel Gonzalez has revealed that Barcelona have never approached the club regarding the defender.

“We have not received any contact, nor any official or even unofficial offer from Barcelona’s board regarding the signing of Aymeric Laporte,” he said, as per SPORT.

Gonzalez also rejected suggestions that discussions had taken place between the two clubs.

“At this moment, there are no negotiations of any kind between the two clubs, and everything being reported in the various media outlets is nothing more than rumours that bear no relation to reality.”

Athletic Club insist Laporte is staying

Beyond dismissing the speculation, Athletic Club made it clear that Laporte remains central to their plans for the upcoming campaign.

The defender is regarded as one of the leaders of the squad, with the club placing significant value on both his experience and technical qualities. 

Regardless of the latest Barcelona transfer news, Athletic have no intention of considering offers for the Spain international.

“Laporte is one of the key players in the team’s plans for the new season, and we have great confidence in his technical ability and accumulated experience, so we have never considered letting him go.”

He then delivered the clearest statement regarding the defender’s future.

“Aymeric Laporte will remain with us and will not be leaving during the current summer transfer window, as we consider him a key player and an important part of the team,” he concluded.
