La Liga president proposes ambassadorial role for Vinicius after retirement | OneFootball

Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. has been a constant target of racist abuse in recent years and it is fair to say that the Brazilian is the most vilified player in La Liga.

Vinicius has faced racial slurs quite frequently in away matches, which has led to strong reaction from the player himself, who has been quite critical of La Liga’s inaction.

Javier Tebas, in particular, has been the subject of much criticism. Although the La Liga president has acknowledged the racism Vinicius has faced in La Liga, many believe the Spaniard has not taken any substantial measures to curb this problem.

Tebas’ olive branch to Vinicius

In a recent media interaction (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Javier Tebas yet again spoke about the racism faced by Vinicius Junior.

Tebas participated in the presentation of an agreement between La Liga and the Ministry of Inclusion regarding the fight against racism in football. When asked about Vinicius’ situation, Tebas highlighted the player’s leadership in this fight.

The La Liga president went on to claim that Vinicius could be the league’s ambassador after his retirement.

“Vinicius receives racist insults because he is a leader against the fight for racism,” Tebas said.

“He cannot be an ambassador for La Liga because he is an active player, but when he retires we will obviously propose it to him.”

Tebas also addressed the broader issue of racism in Spanish football, saying: “Spain is not a racist country, there is obviously racist behaviour.

“I am not going to talk about the number because as soon as there is one, we have to fight to eradicate it. Spain lacks awareness that good people have to speak up.”

As Spanish clubs prepare for the 2024/25 campaign, Tebas’ main objective will be to curb these racist incidents against players across all the stadiums.
