Manchester City could be subject to further transfer interest from sister club Girona this summer following a recruitment meeting held by the Catalan side.
Girona have already enjoyed close ties with the City Football Group in recent seasons, often becoming the destination for young Etihad Stadium prospects, or talents from elsewhere in the group, in need of senior development minutes.
Having qualified for the UEFA Champions League in recent seasons, the Catalan club are particularly eager to strengthen their squad depth in order to perhaps hit those heights once again in the near future.
Recent reports have pointed to Girona’s pursuit of attacking talent, although their hopes of landing one of City’s brightest prospects, Claudio Echeverri, have been dashed, however, with the teenager instead closing in on a season-long loan move to Bayer Leverkusen.
Elsewhere, Girona’s existing relationship with City has already been strengthened this summer through the arrival of 19-year-old defender Vitor Reis, signed from Palmeiras for £29.6 million in January, now spending the season in La Liga to accelerate his development.
As highlighted by journalist Nil Sola, Echeverri’s decision to join Bayer Leverkusen on loan for the season is ‘bad news’ for Girona – who have found it ‘impossible’ to secure a player of the Argentine’s level in the squad.
However, it is highlighted that in recent days, there have been ‘important meetings’ at the La Liga to see ‘how and who’ to bring in, while a further operation with Manchester City – having already secured Vitor Reis for the season on loan – has not been ruled out.
Looking ahead, Girona may look at other members of Manchester City’s highly-rated academy or fringe first-team players to bolster their squad before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.
Options could include attacking reinforcements or even midfield additions, given the demands of continental football. For Manchester City, such arrangements continue to serve a dual purpose: developing their next generation of talent in competitive environments while strengthening CFG affiliates competing at the top level.
Fans should not be surprised if further movement between the Etihad Stadium and Girona takes place before the end of the summer window, but for now it remains unknown whether any names in particular are being eyed.
