La Real are in formidable form, the improvement most evident in results. Diario Vasco highlights a clear upturn as they head to the Bernabéu.
Unbeaten since Girona won at Anoeta in late December, they are eleven matches without defeat, nine under Matarazzo and two under Ansotegi. If they avoid defeat in Madrid, they will match Imanol’s 12-match unbeaten sequence from 23/24 that dazzled in the Champions League.
That earlier run lasted from 8 November to 13 January. It featured positive results against Benfica, Almería, Sevilla, Salzburg, Osasuna, Andratx, Villarreal, Inter, Betis, Cádiz, Alavés and Málaga.
La Real visited the Bernabéu twice last season. In the Copa semi-final, Endrick’s 0-1 in the first leg at Anoeta left the tie uphill, then the visitors won 3-4 in the 90 minutes in Madrid to force extra time, only for a fourth home goal to end the dream as Oyarzabal’s 1-3 had brought La Cartuja into view.
The final match of the Imanol era also came at the Bernabéu, on the last league weekend. Ancelotti’s team won 2-0 in a game short on drama.
