Chivas have not had the start they were hoping for in the new 2026 Apertura season following the conclusion of the World Cup. The results have been mixed, but the overall feeling is that the team has not done enough.
In Matchday 1 of the Liga MX season, they lost 2-0 to Toluca, with Angel Sepulveda being sent off in the 50th minute.
On Matchday 2, they defeated Juarez 1-0 thanks to a Roberto Alvarado goal in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time. Alvarado has been one of the team’s standout performers since club soccer resumed.
In their most recent match, a 1-1 draw against Puebla, it was once again Alvarado who found the back of the net, this time in the 63rd minute. Puebla had taken the lead through Eduardo Mustre Torres in the 26th minute.
That leaves Chivas in 12th place in the Liga MX standings with four points from three matches.
Meanwhile, LAFC are currently second in the MLS Western Conference with 34 points from 19 matches, level on points with first-place Vancouver Whitecaps, who have played 17 games.
Although they were held to a 1-1 draw by Vancouver in their most recent MLS match, with Son Heung-min scoring in the 37th minute and Thomas Muller converting a penalty in the 76th, the Los Angeles side had previously put together a run of three convincing victories: a 4-0 win over Sporting Kansas City on July 25, a 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on July 22 and a 3-0 win against rivals LA Galaxy on July 17.
Truthfully, the MLS club enters this match in better form. However, because of their history and the overall quality of their squad, Chivas may be the side feeling the greater pressure to win.
Match prediction: LAFC 2-1 Chivas

FC Dallas enter the match needing a victory to give their home fans something to celebrate, as they have failed to earn three points in each of their last three matches.
They are coming off a scoreless draw against the LA Galaxy on Aug. 1. Before that, they suffered a 1-0 loss to San Diego FC on July 25, and on July 22 they played to a 2-2 draw against the Portland Timbers.
Queretaro, meanwhile, are enjoying a more positive run of form. Although they opened the Liga MX season with a 1-0 loss to Club America, they bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Pachuca on Matchday 2 before defeating Tigres UANL 3-2 in their most recent match on Aug. 1.
It remains to be seen what will matter more: home-field advantage and the urgency to secure a win, or the strong form Gallos Blancos bring into the match.
Match prediction: Dallas 1-2 Querétaro

Perhaps the night’s hidden gem and one of the best matchups of this Leagues Cup matchday.
Toluca are in good form overall, although they went through a rough stretch at the end of July. They opened the 2026 Apertura season with an impressive 2-0 victory over Chivas before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Pumas and a 3-1 loss to Cruz Azul in the Campeon de Campeones final.
They bounced back in their most recent Liga MX match with a 3-1 win over Necaxa and therefore enter this game with strong momentum as they prepare to host the Seattle Sounders.
Seattle, meanwhile, are coming off a disappointing 2-1 loss to rivals Portland Timbers on Aug. 1. They also fell 1-0 to the Philadelphia Union on July 25 and were beaten 3-1 by Austin FC on July 22.
The Sounders currently sit ninth in the MLS Western Conference with 24 points from 17 matches.
Seattle’s poor run of form, the challenge of playing at altitude at Estadio Nemesio Diez and Toluca’s strong overall form make the Liga MX club the clear favorite heading into this opening Leagues Cup match.
Match prediction: Toluca 3-1 Seattle
