Los Angeles FC shook up the market by announcing the signing of 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder Igor Jesus from Estrela Amadora, a top-tier Portuguese club. Under contract until 2028, Jesus arrives as a promising talent to fill a U22 Initiative spot and strengthen the Black & Gold’s international roster. For a team currently undergoing a midfield transition, the addition of the young Brazilian reflects the club’s forward-thinking vision.
Brazilians can be proud to have produced one of the youngest stars in soccer, Igor Jesus, who has been able to amass 47 professional appearances between two clubs which have shaped him: Flamengo and Estrela Amadora. At Flamengo, the midfielder won two titles before moving into European soccer. Still in his early career stages, Jesus already has enough quality to attract attention from LAFC, which sees in him the ideal candidate for the ambitions it nurtures.
For John Thorrington, LAFC’s co-president and general manager, Jesus’ signing represents more than just adding talent to the roster. According to Thorrington, the player combines attributes that can make an impact both on and off the field.
"Igor is a player who has shown great promise and progress early in his professional career, and we’re confident he will be a quality player and person for the club."
This is not a coincidence coming of Igor Jesus. LAFC is profoundly changing the midfield left behind after the exchange of Ilie Sánchez, Lewis O'Brien, and Eduard Atuesta. With expiring contracts and new tactical demands, there was a sense that the club needed to act fast to renew their team's heart.
In addition to Jesus, the roster now features promising local talent Jude Terry and Celtic FC loanee Odin Thiago Holm. The club’s strategy is clear: invest in youth and potential to build a dynamic and competitive midfield.
At just 21 years old, Jesus joins a rebuilding group that remains ambitious about competing for titles. He will have the opportunity to grow, learn from his new teammates, and face the challenges of MLS’ high-level competition.
The 2025 season will be a real test for Igor Jesus and his new team. LAFC’s calendar kicks off with the Concacaf Champions Cup, where they’ll face the Colorado Rapids on February 18. Four days later, the team makes its MLS debut against Minnesota United.
This fast-paced start to the season offers the perfect opportunity for Jesus to prove himself. Young and full of energy, he'll adjust quickly to MLS' style of play and show why LAFC made him a priority signing.
