FC Bayern qualified for the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup with a narrow 3-2 win over Union Berlin on Wednesday evening. Konrad Laimer was relieved after the victory

Laimer put it in a nutshell after FC Bayern’s 3-2 win in the DFB Cup at Union Berlin: „The decisive factor was not the brilliance of the game, but pure hard work against an opponent who demanded everything from Munich.

Speaking to ZDF after the game, Laimer emphasized how difficult the performance at the Alte Försterei was: „We all knew it wasn’t going to be easy today. Lots of high balls, lots of tackles, lots of set pieces, lots of long throw-ins – we had the full package.“ Bayern controlled the game better in the first half, but lost their grip somewhat after the restart.

Particularly striking: Munich scored all three goals from set pieces, while Union Berlin equalized twice from penalties. For Laimer, this is proof of how crucial these situations are in the cup: „Set pieces are simply an important topic in soccer, especially in such close games. I’m very happy that we were able to turn that into our strength today.“

„Either you move on or you’re gone“

When asked whether Bayern had adjusted specifically to set pieces after the Arsenal defeat, Laimer was clear: „No, not really to Arsenal or any other team. We always have a concept for blocks and positions – but of course without fouls. And for me, that wasn’t a foul at all at the back.“

Laimer sees the fact that Munich progressed despite two penalties against them and an intense style of play from Berlin as a must-win: „In the cup, it’s simple: either you progress or you’re out.“

Laimer has no preference when it comes to the quarter-finals, but does have one wish: „I don’t care at all. I’d like a home game.“

Bayern are through to the quarter-finals after the 3-2 win and can continue to dream of the final in Berlin – this time in the Olympic Stadium.
