Matchday 20 in LaLiga EA Sports brought a raft of disputed calls, from penalties to dismissals and VAR checks. According to as.com, referee analyst Iturralde González reviewed each flashpoint and offered clear verdicts.
In Betis v Villarreal, Chimy Ávila went down under contact from Foyth but Víctor García Verdura waved away appeals, a decision Iturralde backed as nothing. Later Santi Comesaña was sent off for a tackle from behind on Lo Celso, which he deemed a straightforward red and praised the referee.
In Osasuna v Oviedo, with the score at 0-1, Budimir netted with his hand and the goal was rightly ruled out, while an earlier Oviedo penalty shout was rejected. Iturralde said it was not a penalty and felt Budimir should have been booked. He said 1-2 was valid despite a cross deflecting off a team-mate’s arm because a different player scored, VAR then cancelled a Boyomo handball penalty, and Catena was sent off for a clear stamp.
In Mallorca v Athletic, a Vivian handball brought a VAR confirmed penalty at 1-1 and Mallorca scored from the rebound. Iturralde felt there was no arm to ball movement and it came off a team-mate, though the referee may have seen the arm move. A second penalty for a Yuri handball was, in his view, correct, and Athletic had Guruzeta and the benched Lekue sent off, the former for dissent that earned a second booking.
In Real Madrid v Levante, at 12 minutes Bellingham tripped Carlos Álvarez on the edge and the foul was given, with Iturralde saying a yellow was merited. Vencedor was then booked for a high challenge on Vinicius and Aurélien Tchouameni collected a caution for a tackle on Carlos Álvarez, ruling him out of the next match against Villarreal. At 36 minutes a soft Madrid penalty appeal involving Tchouameni and Manu Sánchez was dismissed, and Iturralde felt Camavinga also escaped a booking for a trip on Iván Romero.
After the break, Dela fouled Mbappé in the area, the penalty was awarded and converted, which he called correct. In Espanyol v Girona, a first penalty for a pull on Hugo Rincón was retaken for Dmitrovic encroachment and Vanat scored. The 0-2 also came from the spot after Rubén Sánchez clipped Asprilla, adding to home frustration.
