A major flashpoint in Espanyol v Celta centred on what would have been Celta’s second, Borja Iglesias’ 77th-minute finish, which sparked an offside debate.

As reported by as.com, former referee Iturralde González reviewed the incident and said the goal should have stood. He argued the law was being misapplied and took issue with the interpretation.

Iglesias finished from the ground.

The goal was initially awarded, then referee Cuadra Fernández went to the monitor and ultimately disallowed it for offside, despite the ball having come off an opponent.

Iturralde maintained the defender had the ball under control, was not forced and could have cleared if he wished, so the offside offence should not have applied.
