LaLiga has begun demanding 261.65 euros from about 2,000 users who are said to have watched illegal streams, after a Córdoba court ordered eight internet providers to identify subscribers behind flagged IPs.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, these initial claims total about 523,000 euros and cover matches between August and November. Dueñas Ruart Abogados, which advises LaLiga in Córdoba, expects the tally could pass 8,000 by May.
Three of the eight operators have replied, a step that could precede further legal action.
LaLiga can monitor IP connections but not users’ identities. A preliminary order by Judge Antonio Fuentes of Mercantile Court No 1 in Córdoba requires LaLiga to submit illicit IP lists so providers release subscriber data. The court also cited a LaLiga technical report indicating access to content that breaches intellectual property.
As illicit viewing has shifted to VPNs, the court issued two further rulings in January ordering VPN providers to disconnect or block users. The action is being pursued by LaLiga and Telefónica, as games are broadcast on Movistar.
The orders target providers based in Switzerland and the Netherlands that together account for 65% of the global VPN market, and are designed to enable dynamic blocking throughout the season, the report said. The rulings cannot be appealed and are expected to take effect shortly, ahead of a lawsuit seeking a definitive block in Spain on domains and IPs streaming league matches illegally.
