According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the Spanish government and LaLiga have unveiled tougher measures to prevent and punish violence in and around football grounds, with a particular focus on gender-based abuse.

At the second Congress on Emergencies in Football Stadiums at Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano, Interior minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska and LaLiga president Javier Tebas outlined new tools to tackle violent behaviour.

LaLiga has approved a protocol that will take effect next season, requiring violet points in every stadium and the appointment of gender-violence protection delegates. The National Police’s Family and Women Unit collaborated on the text.

At least one violet point must be installed in each stand to respond to discrimination, gender or sexual violence, abuse, or harassment based on sex or gender. Clubs must also set up violet rooms to support potential victims. The protocol aims to anticipate, prepare and coordinate responses.

Grande-Marlaska said work is under way to reform the 2007 law against violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport, with a focus on pursuing ultra groups and safeguarding events around stadiums. The review is being led by the Comisión Antiviolencia, which includes the government, the prosecutor’s office, the RFEF and LaLiga among others. He added that sport should be a celebration, and that insult, racism, gender discrimination and any violence cannot be excused as passion.
